Three beautiful things…

I’ve had a pretty dreadful past few weeks.  I won’t go into the details but there have been a series of recent events that have really just kicked me in the guts and sucked out all my creative energy.

Since this blog is meant to be my happy place, I’ve decided instead to focus on some of the good things that happened during the same period and helped to pull me out of my bad mood.  (Credit for the title and subject of this post goes of course, to this fabulous blogger.)

My Three Beautiful Things:

1. My new desktop wallpaper – that my son made for me.  Everytime i boot up either my work or home computer and this pic appears, it just makes me smile.birthday gift from my son

2.  The Golden Compass – My neighbour stopped by the day before my birthday and surprised me with a beautifully wrapped gift of the book His Dark Materials, a trilogy by Philip Pullman.  So far, it’s been a fabulously, enjoyable read along the lines of the Tales of Narnia or Harry Potter – meant for kids but great for adults as well.

I’ve just finished The Golden Compass, the first novel of the trilogy.  It’s currently in theatres and i’m now really looking forward to seeing it over the Christmas break.  You can view the trailer here.

3.  Christmas Parties – I’m on my third so far for the season.  I don’t think it’s physically possible for anyone to stay in a bad mood after basking in the glow of a few of these… I love Christmas.

Next session of Glass Class 101 delayed…

AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

… for at least another week.  Looks like I’ll need more time to research as the planned subject is much more complex and controversial than I originally thought.

Update 12/15:  I think it’s probably safe to say that the Glass Class 101 sessions will be on hiatus until the new year.  I’m off to enjoy the best of the holiday season.

Random thoughts: birthdays and the joy of cool

birthday gift

1.  Glassy gifts: Just had my birthday and my friends funded my latest glass purchase: a new bead press and some frit.  How cool is that?

2.  Late bloomer? This b-day was special for some reason – i actually felt it, when usually birthdays pass just like any other day despite the celebrations.  must be the beginning of a new stage in my life.  and that’s pretty cool.

3.  I love handmade stuff:  for my b-day the Teenager made me a beautiful new digital wallpaper image for my desktop in all my fave colours (hot orange, bright pink and deep purple).  It was created in  Photoshop and took him “foreverrrrrrrr” something to do with blending custom brushes, colours, fonts, vectors, fractals, blah, blah, blah… etc., etc.  whatever.  it’s installed both at home and at work, and looks way cool.  i love it.  especially since it comes from my kid who thinks everything should be black, white, gray or navy blue.

4.  Essence of adolescence:  On the bus ride home a couple days ago, this kid sat down in front of me done up from head to toe in what i can only assume was his definition of the latest in 13yr old, bad-ass, hip-hop cool: poofy down bomber, angled baseball cap, artfully dishevelled ‘fro, oversized layered Ts, huge jeans strategically belted mid-buttcheek with the crotch dangling somewhere at the knee and large name brand sneakers.  overall colour combo? black, dark green and white.  yo.  tiiiiiiight.

He kept shifting in his seat and adjusting the various garments using his reflection in the facing window seemingly to determine just the right degree of anti-establishment slouch.  It was all i could do to keep a straight face through these antics.  cuz you know six months ago, his mom was probably still laying out his clothes for him but now?  baby, he’s in junior high.  ccccoooool.

5.  Cool mom?  The Teenager attended his first real grownup (i.e. no gaming, pizza, sleepover or parental involvement) party last weekend.  and yes, with my permission.  He calmly asked.  then waited for me to finish hyperventilating about sending my baby off to some booze and drug filled hellhole, in some stranger’s house, with a bunch of older friends i hadn’t met, and did he really know who these people were and trust them to not be crazy? and, and… well uhhh, you get the picture.  He was fine, got home within curfew limits, admitted to everyone drinking except him (yay!) and had one word about the experience: “AWESOME”.

I’ve had a few people mention that this act officially makes me a “cool” mom.  I disagree.  i was simply being practical: First, I trust him – he’s mature, smart and responsible.  Second, at his age, i (technically) wasn’t permitted to go to these types of parties but my friends and i still attended many under the guise of the now infamous, intricately planned, arranged and parental approved “sleepover”.

Nothing like a lovely warm soak…

beads in the kiln

…for several hours near 960F to keep my beadies happy and healthy.  Here’s a pic just after the completion of their cooling cycle in the kiln…

Today’s picture is also a hint regarding the second topic to be covered in Glass Class 101 (next session coming later this week).

Two pendants also off to a good home

I recently donated these two pendants to the charity silent auction at my office.  I’m happy to say both went to the same home.  Both pendants were wired on sterling silver and came with 18″ sterling silver snake chains.

Spring Rain Pendant: Approx. 2.25″

The pendant is made of opaque and transparent light blue glass, wrapped in pure silver, then lightly sprinkled with several shades of frit (tiny glass chips).  The opaque blue base is slightly reduced to bring out the streaks of red copper within the glass.

Autumn Leaves Pendant: Approx. 2.5″

The pendant is made of a white base of glass sprinkled with several shades of powdered enamel and frit.  The tree trunk is made from a tri-colour latticino (twisted glass cane).
